Fragrance Guide, Hints & Tips
We all love to smell nice, these simple, helpful tips will hopefully help you get the most from your favourite fragrance.
Storing your Fragrance
Always store your perfume in a cool, dry place and never in direct sunlight - this may eventually damage the scent. A bottle of perfume should last around 12 months, by storing away correctly you could increase its life by a few months.
Applying your Fragrance
Perfume is best applied to the pulse points on your body, pulse points are where the blood flows fastest, they are:
- Behind the ears
- Inside the knees and elbows
- Neck
- Wrist
- Chest
Making your Scent Last Longer
'Layering' is regarded as the best way to enhance your fragrance longevity. This is basically using the body products that are available to purchase along with your favourite fragrance. Starting with the bath/shower gel, then applying the body cream/lotion creates the first layer, topped up with your fragrance this created the second layer. This helps the fragrance stay longer on your skin.
Spraying a light mist and walking in to it will also help keep the fragrance longer, along with a light mist sprayed in to your hair.
The Difference between Perfume Types
The different types of fragrance available tell you how strong the fragrance is and long long you can expect it to last once you apply it to your skin. The amount of perfume essence found in different fragrance types determines the strength. The main types of fragrance are:
Perfume: This has the highest concentrate of perfume essence, 15-30% , it is the most expensive of the range. Less is more in this case, so the bottle will last longer. The fragrance will also last up to 8 hours depending on your skin type.
EDP: This has around 8-15% of the perfume essence. Excluding the perfume, its has the highest concentrate od perfume essence. It can last up to 6 hours depending on your skin type.
EDT: This has around 5-10% concentrate of the perfume essence. It is normally the cheapest of the varieties available for women, and can last between 2-4 hours. This type of fragrance can benefit from the layering technique as described earlier. This is also the strongest variety available for men.
EDC & Aftershaves: EDC contains around 3-5% concentrate. Aftershaves contains slightly less than the 3-5% but is generally kinder to the skin.
The different strengths and how long the fragrance lasts are reflected in the prices of perfumes and Aftershaves. Check the fragrance you are buying to make sure it suits your needs.
Testing Perfumes
When you are looking for a new fragrance, try not to test more than 3 at any one time, this way your nose will not get confused or overpowered by the different smells.
When testing spray a little on your wrist as well as the card given in department stores, this way you can test hoe the fragrance reacts to your skin. Allow the scent to settle until dry, you need to give it a chance to work its way on to your skin. Never rub your wrists together either, this can cause the scent to bruise or smudge, which can alter the smell of the fragrance.
